Derek grew up in an orphange in Bootle. At 16, whilst experiencing a turbulent home life with his foster parents, he decided to join the Royal British Navy. During his spare time in the Navy he would sketch on the ships, study for his qualifications, and enrich his mind with art books. After 9 years serving in The Navy, Derek began studying Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, before completing his MA at Chelsea School Of Art.
Diagnosed with leukemia in 2015, whilst recieving treatment, Derek would often think about the art he wanted to create. He remained in remission for nearly two years, at which point he moved his focus from abstracts to experimenting with figurative art and screenprinting. In June 2018, Derek passed away.
